Background Checks in Ohio

As Ohio’s planning and justice assistance agency, the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services does not offer background checks or criminal record searches. For your convenience, the following are a few options available in Ohio for these services:

Sheriff Offices. Criminal record check information for Ohio residents may be obtained through the Sheriff’s Office of the county in which the person resides. The cost for this service is usually minimal—around $3.00—with some Offices charging no fee for background checks. For a complete listing of Ohio’s 88 Sheriffs and their contact information, visit: www.buckeyesheriffs.org.

Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation (BCI&I): Part of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, BCI&I offers WebCheck®, an Internet-based system for civilian background checks. With many checks taking as little as a few hours to conduct, should a search find a criminal record, BCI&I will provide the results via the U.S. Postal Service. The cost for BCI&I to perform a WebCheck is approximately $15 per transaction; however, some participating agencies and vendors also offering WebCheck may charge additional fees for the services.
