Executive Order 13929

Executive Order 13929 on Safe Policing for Safe Communities was issued by President Donald Trump on June 16, 2020. The purpose of this Executive Order is "to ensure that law enforcement agencies continue striving to provide transparent, safe, and accountable delivery of services to communities."

The U.S. Department of Justice has designated independent credentialing bodies in each state across the country. In Ohio, The Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) and the Ohio Collaborative Law Enforcement Agency Certification Program has been selected as the independent credentialing body. As the independent credentialing body, OCJS will be responsible for certifying law enforcement agencies. To receive certification, agencies must be compliant with two mandatory safe policing principles:

  1. 1. Adherence to applicable laws.
  2. 2. Prohibition of choke holds.
This certification will be required for agencies to be eligible for Department of Justice discretionary grant funding in 2021. Agencies must be certified by January 31, 2021 to be eligible for these federal funds. The certification will be valid for 3 years.
